Certified Dispensing Optician

3-year full-time study programme or distance learning programme, after the successful completion of which a Specialist Diploma is awarded

Characteristics

 This field of study is one of the most sought after and those who complete their studies have great possibilities in the labour market. The graduates are fully prepared for performing all the activities at the opticians. After gaining necessary work experience the graduates are able to work as managers or may even open their own company. The technical skills of graduates also provide working opportunities in the production and trade of optical and ophthalmologic devices and equipment.

The overall aim of the technical part of the studies is to gain all the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are needed during the making of glasses according to the ophthalmologist’s prescription, and furthermore focuses on the ability to offer customer advice. Simultaneously the student is educated in the fields of psychology, marketing and the theory of management in order to be prepared for future managing positions. Furthermore, professional training at selected opticians is also part of this programme. The lessons in technical skills are held in completely new, fully-equipped optical laboratories.

The programme enables the development of students’ individual interests as it offers compulsory elective subjects in higher years. Moreover, the graduates of this programme can enrol at technical colleges or university, namely at the Bachelor’s Study Programme in Optometry.

Graduate Profile

The graduates of this field are able:

  • To make and repair corrective eye aids according to the prescription
  • To measure the distance of pupils and accordingly to choose suitable frames
  • To adjust and fit customer spectacles in accordance with customer head size, so as to meet functional, hygienic and aesthetic needs
  • To give professional advice on how to use and take care of corrective aids, and to recommend other appropriate products
  • To take care of the optical machines and instruments
  • To offer advice in the choice of frames and to recommend suitable eye lenses
  • To make the most complex corrective aids for seriously vision-impaired patients
  • To work with a refractor under the supervision of an ophthalmologist
  • To manage the agenda necessary for the management of a company

Diseases or health impairment substantial for the assessment of the student’s health capability to apply for the enrolment into the educational programme is pursuant to the government degree No. 224/2007 sb., on the Curriculum of Primary, Secondary and Higher Technical Educational Programmes, as amended.

Study Programme Organization

The study programme is organized as a 3-year full-time programme or a 3-year distance learning programme. At the end of the programme Specialist Diploma Examinations in technical subjects and in a foreign language are taken. The defence of a thesis is also part of the Specialist Diploma Examination. After the successful passing, graduates are awarded the degree Certified Specialist and can use the title DiS after their names.

The distance learning programme is organized into approx. 16-18 weekdays during the winter term and another 16-18 weekdays in the summer term. The study programme is structured as obligatory consultations taking place usually from Monday to Wednesday.

It is presupposed that the distance learning applicants shall be employees of opticians so that they have the opportunity to namely put the manual skills shown at the consultations into practice. We also recommend distance study students make an agreement with their employers regarding school attendance permission.
